“PEOPLE travel primarily to get away from pressure and have some fun. Secondly, you will find that different tourists have different preferences. Some like to experience local folk culture, some enjoy natural scenery or historical sites, while others want to savor different food. It is pivotal for local governments to study tourist behavior and develop their tourism brand with a clearer focus. I am amazed at the video clip that briefly showed the beauty of vibrant Shenzhen. I do not have a deep understanding of the city, but I am sure it has a bright future, given its vitality and potential. But, I have one suggestion for Shenzhen. It has picturesque beaches, but so do many other cities in the world. It has wide avenues and striking high-rise buildings, which are again shared by many other cities. It is not viable to offer things that others already offer. It is more important to have a unique tourist appeal that others do not have. That is to say, Shenzhen needs its own tourism brand. I am also concerned about the impact of developing tourism on the environment. It is wrong to sacrifice a city’s environment for the growth of tourism. Local governments need to find a balance between satisfying the needs of tourists and reducing to a minimum the pollution they cause. Governments need to offer guidance and urge tourists to behave responsibly.” Speaker: Christopher Anthony Ryan, professor in tourism, University of Waikato, New Zealand
