
鹏城最老学校南头中学百年校庆
Shenzhen Nantou Middle School, the oldest school in Shenzhen history, will stage a series of activities over the coming weekend to mark its centenary.
More than 2,000 alumni* from China and abroad will attend the celebrations* to be staged on Saturday.
The centenary, organized by the Nanshan District People's Government, is an important event in the district's education leaders' agenda. During the celebrations, a school alumnus called Huang Baoqi, a Chinese-American physicist and space scientist, will give a lecture to encourage the younger generation.
Chen Jia'er, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences*, and well-known scholar Xie Mian will have a discussion with students and attend the ceremony unveiling* a sculpture called "the Wings of Hope."
Headmasters of 12 schools in China, which have a history of more than 100 years, will attend a forum on important issues related to school management and teaching.
The celebrations also included a performance* by the school's 800 teachers and students and big-bowl banquets* for alumni, the school's tradition for anniversary celebrations.
The school originally* Fenggang College, which was established* in the Qing Dynasty in the sixth year of the reign of Jaiqing Emperor (1796-1820). In 1906 during the reign* of the Guangxu Emperor (1875--1908), the college became Fenggang School, a public school with a new school system. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the school took the new name of Bao'an No. 1 Middle School.
In the past century, the school, which has taught more than 30,000 students, was regarded as "the root and forerunner of Shenzhen's education." In 1979, the school's name was changed to Shenzhen Nantou Middle School. It has been honored as a "green school," a modern IT experimental school and a key provincial-level key school in Guangdong.
Recently, the school passed the assessment* of national model senior high school organized by the Ministry of Education*.
