Borrow 200,000 yuan to be a dutiful son?

A man from Nujiang, Yunan Province, borrowed 200,000 yuan, or US$25,000, to take his 88-year-old father on a trip through China's major cities, saying it was his longtime dream to do his filial duty.

But many people think the 48-year-old man, Zhang Guangze, is doing it just for the media attention.

His father's ex-wife (who is not Zhang's mother) and two of her relatives are also on the trip. They flew to Guangzhou on October 30. After the trip to Beijing, Zhang bought a new car for more than 100,000 yuan and planned to drive the party to other major cities.

Zhang said he was happy to see the smile on his father's face, according to the Beijing News. It reported that his father was so happy that he burst into tears.

Zhang travelled to Beijing by bike in 1987 after graduating from college. He said he wanted his parents to have the chance to make the trip to the capital themselves. Zhang said he earns less than 2,000 yuan a month and it will take him 10 years to repay the money.

While some people said the man is a good, responsible son, many others thought it was not a good idea to be dutiful to parents in this way.

You don't have to spend a lot of money to be a good son, as simple things like taking the time to talk to your parents are just as important, many people said.
