Demand for reward sparks debate
    2007年01月10日

的哥拾到19万现金索3万奖金引争议

A Changsha taxi driver recently stirred up a great deal of controversy after demanding he be paid an advertised 30,000-yuan (US$3846) reward before he returned 190,000 yuan in cash left in his vehicle by a passenger.

On December 31 last year, Changsha resident Yan Jianhui accidently left cash totaling 190,000 yuan in a taxi. Since she did not have the receipt for taxi fare, and couldn't remember the license number of the car, she announced to the public that she would give a reward of 30,000 yuan to anyone who returned the money.

Four days later, she was told by Hunan Radio Station that a taxi driver with Changsha Carnival Taxi Co. had offered to returned the full amount in cash.

When Yan arrived at the radio station, the taxi driver was not there, but a friend of his said Yan needed to first sign an agreement saying she would pay the 30,000-yuan reward.

This demand made Yan angry. She said the reward should be given to a selfless person. "From the innermost of my heart, I don't want to offer the reward to him," said Yan.

When asked for their opinion, some taxi drivers said that as Yan had made the offer, the driver had every right to ask for the reward. Other taxi drivers felt that if he was a good person, he would return the lost money for nothing.

Lawyers said that Yan had publicly announced the reward, and this was a legally-binding promise. If the driver did not return the whole sum of the money, he would definitely be committing a crime.
