HUNDREDS of Chinese celebrities are complaining of harassment after their telephone numbers were leaked to the public on a Web site.
A list containing the contact numbers of 400 singers, actors and actresses was published online recently and some of the numbers were the mobile numbers of film stars’. A media organization later tried the numbers and discovered 90 percent were correct.
Female singer Sun Yue, confined to her home in the last stages of pregnancy, was kept awake by fans ringing late into the night. She said she hoped they would not continue to call her late at night.
Actor Zhang Tielin has called on the government to create a law to protect the rights of public figures.
He complained that his mobile phone was sometimes drained of power in half-a-day with the number of incoming calls.
Pop star Zang Tianshuo said he received two text messages early this week. One was from a fan and the other from an organization that claimed to be collecting money for charity.
In June last year the private numbers of nearly 600 celebrities were revealed on the Internet. Zhang Guoli, a film director who was one of them, made a movie “The 601st Call” based on the incident.
Analysts say such practices are aimed at raising Web site profiles.
