EXPRESSWAYS are meant to offer speedy transport, but drivers may fall into speeding traps set by some traffic police chasing fines, said Wang Zhenxin, a deputy to the National People’s Congress (NPC).
“Sometimes speed limit signs are out of sight to lure speeding drivers into a trap,” he said.
To fine drivers, traffic police set a speed limit of 80 to 100 km per hour on a three-lane expressway, often with very little notice, said Wang.
What’s more, traffic police may drive an unmarked car on expressway patrols or hide in an obscure place to catch speeding drivers, he claimed.
He suggested appropriate speed limit be set to make the expressway function more effectively.
Chinese romance
ORGANIZERS of sports events and cultural activities should be able to hold a grand gala in Tiananmen Square to mark Qixi, or Chinese Valentine’s Day, which falls on the eve of the Olympic Games’ scheduled opening ceremony Aug. 8, 2008, to entertain foreign athletes and visitors with the colorful folk story of a cow herder falling in love with a fairy weaver, Li Hanqiu, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) suggested.
The scholar also proposed producing souvenirs, such as stamps and envelopes based on the romance, to help promote the oriental festival.
Russian paper
WITH the increasing exchange between China and Russia, it’s time to launch an influential Russian-language newspaper in the country, Li Jingjie told a panel discussion during the annual session of the top advisory body.
“The people of Russian-speaking countries are eager to learn about China, but there are not enough China-related publications for them,” said Li.
Sexual harassment
HAN DEYUN, a deputy to the NPC, has suggested the inclusion of punishment for sexual harassment in the draft labor contract law, which is being deliberated by the national legislature.
In August 2005, sexual harassment was written into an amendment to the law on women’s rights protection, Han said. However, Han noted, the amendment only protects women from sexual harassment. Men can also be harassed by women or even by the same sex, he said.
