About 100 ink paintings, oil paintings and woodprints by late Chinese artist An Zhengzhong are on show at the Guan Shanyue Art Museum, as part of an exhibition cosponsored by the Shaanxi Fine Art Museum. An (1934-2003), a Henan native who devoted his life to the preservation of Chinese folk art, was named “Folk Art Pioneer” by the Ministry of Culture in 1988. Highly skilled in ink painting, oil painting and woodprint, he donated hundreds of his works to the Shaanxi Fine Art Museum along with more than 600 folk art pieces in his private collection. The primary themes of his paintings are his life in the army and the natural landscape in Northwest China. Woodprints brought him early fame but ink paintings best represented his real artistic achievements. An’s passionate love for Chinese traditions and his simple honest character gave his works a unique beauty, praised by art reviewer Liu Xiaochun as “purity of An’s style.” An’s family donated five of his works to the Guan Shanyue Art Museum to mark the opening of the exhibition in memory of the artist Friday.
