Officials and residents strike the bell in front of the Zhongying Street Museum of History, a municipal patriotic education base in Shatoujiao, Yantian District, Shenzhen, yesterday to remind people of the humiliation the country suffered March 18, 1899. Compelled by Britain, the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) government signed the Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong in 1898, leasing an area of 975.1 square kilometers in Xin'an County for a term of 99 years to Britain.
On March 18, 1899, the new border for the "New Territories" was determined, with Zhongying Street as a boundary between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland.
