Mysterious animals under the sea
    2007年03月21日

Giant squid

“This Giant Squid sounds pretty interesting, don’t you think?”

Giant Squids have torpedo-like bodies, a beak-like mouth.

A squid is estimated to be about 100 feet (3.3 meters) long with four inch suckers and 35-foot tentacles.

Their normal diet is sperm whales. Oddly enough sperm whales also eat them!

Blue whales

“Being big makes us feel grand!”

The largest living animal is the blue whale. Adult blue whales weigh 130 tons or more and are the size of two and a half school buses. An adult blue whale’s tongue is about the weight of an elephant and its fins have the same bones as the human arm. The female’s fins and body are larger than the male’s. The female blue whale makes larger jumps than the male when alarmed.

Sea horse

“We are pretty good at swimming!”

Their eyes are on the sides of their head and they can move each eye independently! Also they have prehensile (of an animal’s foot or tail able to grasp and hold things) tails and they use them to rise up in the ocean. They do this by curling and straightening the tail. Both males and females have fins on their backs.

The sea horse has a hard life because it has to eat all day long. It does not do this for pleasure though; it does it because the sea horse has no stomach to store food in.

Starfish

“I think that you will be fascinated/attracted by starfish!!”

You may have heard of starfish or sea stars. They are both the same thing! They can be found in every single ocean. They are born symmetrical (having two halves which are the same in size and shape) and usually have five arms. Starfish can have more than 40 arms, and when one is lost they can grow it back. Their skeleton is made of plants, and the texture of their skin is smooth.
