Piano prodigy to perform Beethoven, Brahms

Piano prodigy Liu Yangzi will stage a joint concert with the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra at Shenzhen Grand Theater on Friday.

Yu Feng will conduct the concert, which will include “Piano Concerto No. 3” by Beethoven and Brahms’ “Symphony No. 1.”

Members of the local philharmonic club are being offered free tickets by the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra.

Liu, a pupil of top Chinese pianist and conductor Shi Shucheng, began learning to play the piano at 4 and made her debut at 10. Having performed with a symphony orchestra at 11, the piano prodigy is now studying at the Hamburg Academy for Music and Theater in Germany.

Cheap shows at ‘Weekend Theater’

Shenzhen Citizens’ Art Gallery theater will be hosting 40 weekend shows at low prices over the coming months.

At least 15 shows have been scheduled for the first half of the year, including folk music, Guangdong opera, symphonies, ballets, choral concerts, dancing and Beijing opera.

Named “Weekend Theater,” the series of shows is organized by Shenzhen Municipal Culture Bureau. Local performing troupes will be invited, as well as other groups from Guangdong Province.

The exhibition shows paintings by Danish artists Anders Moseholm, Bent Holstein, Gitte Winther and South Korean artist Kim Min-jung. It will close April 8.

Paintings by Cheng Shifa on display

Chinese painter Cheng Shifa’s solo exhibition is being held at Shenzhen Art Museum through April 8.

Nearly 160 of his paintings together with photographs and precious historical documents are on display. Born in 1912, Cheng is now a council member of Chinese Artists’ Association, and dean of Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy.
