Yang Lijuan, an obsessive* fan of Hong Kong pop star Andy Lau, went to Hong Kong to meet the object of her fixation*, but left with broken dreams and a destroyed family.
The 30-year-old woman has been obsessed with Lau for 13 years, with the full support of her parents. Her father Yang Qinji had earlier sold all his belongings* to feed his daughter’s obsession with Lau, and even attempted to sell a kidney to pay for his family’s trip to Hong Kong to meet Lau.
The family went to Hong Kong from their home in Lanzhou, capital of Gansu Province in Northwest China, to arrange a meeting with Lau.
Yang met Lau and took some pictures with the star on March 25, but was unsatisfied because he didn’t set aside time to talk with her.
After Yang recounted* the experience to her father, the 68-year-old man jumped into Salisbury Sea in Kowloon around midnight on March 26, leaving behind a 12-page suicide note* condemning* Lau’s “cruelty” to his family, in the hope Lau would meet the daughter again and give her some one-on-one time. His body was fished out of* the sea later.
Yang and her mother left Hong Kong on March 28, without taking the father’s body back to their hometown. Yang said she wanted to meet Lau again to realize her father’s “final will.”
Lau, astonished by the incident, said he was disgusted* by selfish, irrational* fans who had no concern or respect for their parents.
Lau’s agency told media they had offered comfort to Yang and her mother after the father’s suicide, but they would not satisfy Yang’s “abnormal wishes.”
Yang and her mother both blamed Lau’s “cruelty” and said if he had been willing to meet her earlier, the tragedy wouldn’t have happened. (SD-Agencies)
