‘The King and I’ to be staged

Hit Broadway musical “The King and I” will be staged in Shenzhen. The Shenzhen shows are directed by the famed Bobby Garcia, whose credits include “Beauty and the Beast” and “Miss Saigon.” Veteran stage actor Paul Nakauchi will reprise his role as King Mongkut of Siam while the part of Anna Leonowens will be played by Brianna Borger. More than 60 actors will take part in this lavish production, including eight Shenzhen children selected by the organizer.

The costumes have been designed by Tim Yip, who has won an Oscar for Best Production Design in “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.”

Concert to salute Teresa Teng

To commemorate the 54th anniversary of the birth of Taiwan superstar Teresa Teng (1953-1995), a solo concert “When Will You Return?” performed by mainland singer Sheng Yan will be held in Shenzhen on April 30.

Organized by Taiwan-based Teresa Teng Foundation, the tour has visited more than 10 cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Wuhan since 2005.

Sheng, who resembles Teng in both voice and singing techniques, will sing more than 30 of Teng’s most famous pop songs.

Teng enjoyed immense popularity all over Asia. The commemorative concert will also tour other Asian countries, including Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.

Ink painting

Chinese painter Xing Qingren is holding a personal ink painting exhibition in Shugutang Art Museum, featuring 60 pieces.

Born in 1960 in Shaanxi Province, Xing studied traditional Chinese painting in Xi’an Fine Art Institute in the 1980s. Many of his works have won national awards and been exhibited in Japan and the United States.

Dates: Through April 28
