Three women make a show

FANG FANG, a Taiwan talk show star who became popular in the 1980s, will take center stage in “Total Women.”

Her solid vocal performances and versatility — including opera singing — have established her as Taiwan’s top female comedian.

“Sister Fang had a 10-minute standup talk show in a popular TV program ‘Miss China’ in the 1980s, and I ran home quickly after school each day in order not to miss her show,” recalled Aya, a Taiwan TV host and co-star in “Total Women.”

Fang used to perform a talk show regularly at 1,500-seat Western restaurants in Taiwan, and diners immediately went quiet the moment she spoke. People were completely distracted by the 20-minute show she performed, director Stan Lai said.

In “Total Women,” Fang is the versatile entertainer, an old lady, a middle-aged divorced woman and a naive girl. The diversity of her roles further enriches the comedy experience.

“At my age, I’ve found much in common with the role I play, to think critically and question the way men look at women,” she said.

Fang also offered a tip to couples. “Two people in love should not hide their true characteristics and pretend to be an ideal lover. Otherwise they will be disappointed after getting married. Love your boyfriend or girlfriend’s true self,” she said.

Aya compared herself to a sponge in the show. “I’m full of energy after studying in the United States for a year. It’s an honor to join the team and have the chance to learn from Stan and Sister Fang,” she said.

Yang Ting, a Beijing drama actress who performs the remaining role in “Total Women,” revealed herself to be a feminist. “Women are like bamboo. They are characterized by compromise and endurance, but in fact they can grow very tall and strong,” she said.
