Handicrafts showcase

GD folk culture

A total of 157 pieces of Guangdong handicrafts from the Guangdong Folk Crafts Museum are being exhibited at the Shenzhen Museum.

The handicrafts, including Guangzhou colored china, Shiwan ceramics (from Foshan), Guangdong embroidery, stone sculptures, Guangzhou ivory sculptures, Chaozhou wood sculptures and Foshan wood prints, were selected from a total of 17,900 pieces dating back to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) currently housed at the Guangzhou-based museum.

The majority of the exhibited items are Guangzhou colored china. During the Yongzheng reign (1722-1735) of the Qing Dynasty, businessmen transported the china from Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province, to Guangzhou where it was colored before being exported.

‘Liu Sanjie’

The epic musical “Liu Sanjie,” which is based on a widely known Guangxi legend, will be staged in Shenzhen this week.

Since she was the third child in her family, Liu was given the nickname “Liu Sanjie,” meaning “the third sister of the Liu family.”

The Zhuang people believe that Liu, having been a lark in her previous birth, acquired a melodious voice by age 3. While in her teens, she was regarded as the top singer of folk songs in an antiphonal style, typical of the ethnic people in South China.

Coveting her beauty and talent, a local tyrant named Mo Huairen wanted to have her as his concubine. Rejected, the angry Mo plotted to murder her. With the help of her boyfriend and fellow villagers, she managed to escape. The two lovers sang as they traveled, and eventually found their ultimate freedom by turning into a pair of larks.

Sounds from grasslands

The Inner Mongolian Youth Chorus will perform in Shenzhen this month, bringing the sounds of the grasslands to the big city.

In 1993, when the chorus performed in Taiwan, music critics praised the choir as “consummate performers from the remote prairies” and “a wonderful flower in China’s choral garden.”

“They have been combining Western choral art with their wonderful unique Mongolian style and succeed in elevating choral art to a new height and creating a unique and distinctive style of prairie chorus,” said a music critic.
