Arsenal takes sole lead

ARSENAL took sole possession of first place in the Premier League on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Wigan after Manchester United fell in a surprising 1-0 loss at Bolton. William Gallas and Tomas Rosicky scored for Arsenal at home in the final eight minutes. Nicolas Anelka’s goal sent Man United to its first defeat at Bolton since 1978.

Inter beats Atalanta

DAVID SUAZO scored one goal and set up another Saturday to help Inter Milan beat Atalanta 2-1 and maintain its lead in Serie A. Earlier, Christian Panucci scored another late winner to help AS Roma beat Genoa 1-0. Inter leads the Italian first division with 28 points, followed by Roma with 25, Fiorentina with 23 and Juventus and Udinese with 22.

Barcelona wins

FC Barcelona overcame a sluggish start to beat Recreativo Huelva 3-0 in the Spanish league Saturday. Gabriel Milito put Barcelona ahead with a header in the 64th minute, and substitute Bojan Krkic doubled the lead two minutes later. Lionel Messi added the third from the penalty spot in the 81st.

Sampras defeats Federer

PETE SAMPRAS notched a win to wrap up a three-match exhibition series against Roger Federer. Sampras never faced a break point and handed Federer a 7-6 (8), 6-4 defeat Saturday at the Venetian Macao arena, finishing 1-2 against the top-ranked Swiss player.
