Give a helping hand as a volunteer
    2007年11月28日  01:33    Shenzhen Daily

Every time I think about the approaching steps of our Universiade, I seem to not only see the Happy U, but also an image of many hands joining together. Those are the hands of the volunteers from all over the world.

Some may be very big and strong, some maybe very small and thin, but when they are put together, it can be extremely helpful, powerful and supportive.

Holding the certificate received for being an outstanding contributor of Shenzhen taking part in the bid for the 2011 Universiade, I could still remember the excitement of being a volunteer.

It was the first time Mr. George E. Killian came to Shenzhen for an inspection. I was his little interpreter. I read him a letter from all the students of Shenzhen. We also sang an English song from his hometown. They were very surprised and touched.

Mr. Killian gave me a big hug and promised me: “You are my Chinese friend and I will see you again in 2011.” I was so excited. I knew we were one more step closer to our Universiade dream. I was very proud at that moment that I could give my helping hand as a volunteer.

The university students of Shenzhen are very enthusiastic about it as well. They are all trying their best to show Shenzhen to the whole world with their great effort, giving hearts and strong passion. I suddenly realize, all the university students are participating as volunteers to show their support.

In fact, we could all be volunteers even if we can’t speak fluent English, or aren’t college students. Our whole city has been thrown into the volunteering spirit. Maybe you don’t notice, but there are so many little things we can start from.

If we use only one plastic bag instead of dozens of them, we can help the Universiade to be more environmentally friendly. If we try to give a helping hand to those in need, we can make the city a better place. If we try to help the foreign visitors with a bright smile, we can make 2011 more splendid.

Volunteering could just start with one person, and that may be him, her, and every one of you.

The Olympics are only a year away, the Universiade is coming closer and closer, let us start volunteering and always volunteer.

Are you ready, to give a helping hand as a volunteer? I am, and I will.
