CHINESE director and screenwriter Wang Xiaoshuai said he hoped Shenzhen residents would fall in love with his award-winning movie, “In Love We Trust,” which will hit theaters across the country tomorrow.
The film, which won the Silver Bear at the 58th Berlin Film Festival in February, premiered in Shenzhen on Saturday.
Wang brought his trophy and the lead pair Liu Weiwei and Cheng Taishen to the premiere.
“This trophy is only something of a show, which is neither my original plan nor my yearlong working style,” said Wang.
“But for the sake of the movie, and for the sake of box office, I agreed to bring it here and show it to you,” he said at the premiere Saturday.
“All members of my cast began to do other things after the shooting of the film was done,” he added. “Only I have to take care of promotion of the film and I become almost crazy now.”
Written and directed by Wang, the film tells the story of a divorced couple who learn that their only chance to save the life of their daughter, who is stricken with leukemia, is to have another child together.
The film has been shot on location in Beijing, with scenes taking place on construction sites and in drab tenements.
The original Chinese title, “Zuo You,” which means “left, right” in English, is an allusion to a Chinese proverbial expression, equivalent in meaning to the Englishman Thomas Hobson’s choice of between a rock and a hard place.
A leading figure among six-generation Chinese film directors, Wang won the Grand Jury Silver Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival in 2001 for his film, “Beijing Bicycle.” He won the Special Jury Prize for “Shanghai Dreams” at the Cannes Film Festival in 2005.
