“The Flower Girl,” a revolutionary opera from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), will be performed at Poly Theater this month. “The Flower Girl” tells the story of a female flower vendor named Huani in 1930s Korea, where exploitation and oppression prevail. In order to clear a debt with their landlord, Huani’s family have to work for the landlord. Having suffered continued oppression, Huani’s family and other villagers eventually bring about a revolution. Utilizing variations of Korean folk songs, the DPRK opera will be presented by the Phibada Opera Troupe, which was founded in 1971.
