The Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra will present a night of works by French composer and pianist Maurice Ravel later this month.
The repertoire will include “Ma Mère I’Oye” (“Mother Goose”), “Tzigane,” “La Valse” and “Daphnis et Chloé No.2.” Chinese conductor Yang Yang will wield the baton.
Ravel originally wrote “Ma Mère l’Oye” as a piano duet in 1910, but it was transcribed for solo piano by Ravel’s friend Jacques Charlot in the same year.
“Tzigane” is a rhapsodic composition dedicated to the Hungarian violinist Jelly d’Arányi. The name of the piece is derived from the generic European term for “gypsy” although it does not use any authentic Gypsy melodies.
“Daphnis and Chloé” is the biggest work composed by Ravel, occupying him from early 1909 until 1912. It is also widely regarded as his most impressive achievement, and among the greatest ballet scores of the 20th century.
“La Valse” is an orchestral work written by Ravel from February 1919 to 1920. While the orchestral work has been described as a tribute to waltz, it is in fact a less sentimental reflection of post-World War I Europe.
