THE impact of air pollution on people’s health has been monitored in communities in Nanshan and Longgang districts since December 2007, officials with the city’s center for disease control and prevention (CDC) said yesterday, World Health Day.

Shenzhen designated three pilot areas, two in Nanshan District and one in Longgang District, in accordance with a national plan to monitor air pollution and disease. The 24-hour monitoring of the target areas is being done from the 10th to 16th day of each month.

Pupils in the target areas receive physical examinations looking at lung functions, saliva, blood and urine while the elderly are checked for coronary heart disease in order to analyze the relationship to air pollution.

Experts said citizens’ awareness should be raised to prevent disease related to climate change.

This year’s World Health Day focused on the need to protect public health from the adverse effects of climate change.
