Cliff collapse

FOUR women students were killed and 12 others injured when part of an earthen cliff suddenly collapsed, burying a school dormitory in Shaanxi Province, Northwest China, on Saturday, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.

Promotion canceled

FRENCH supermarket chain Carrefour has canceled a three-day sale planned for the May Day holidays on the Chinese mainland. This is expected to cut its sales volume by 20 percent during the period. The decision follows demonstrations at Carrefour outlets against "Tibet independence," a Carrefour media manager said in a fax reply to Xinhua news agency Friday.

Canton Fair

THE Canton Fair will be held entirely in the new Pazhou complex and arranged in three phases at the next (104th) session from currently two. The old Liuhua complex will no longer be used, Wang Junwen, Canton Fair's vice president, said at a news briefing Saturday.

Divers missing

Eight holidaymakers were reported missing while scuba diving in waters near Chihsingyen, 22km southwest of Kenting, Taiwan, Saturday, and a search had found nothing as of Saturday afternoon, local newspaper reported yesterday.
