A revolutionary musical depicting the struggle between guerrillas and landlords will be staged from tonight. Presented by Hubei Provincial Opera and Dance Drama Theater, the musical “Red Guerrillas on the Honghu Lake” is based on an incident which happened in the 1930s in Honghu, a city in Central China’s Hubei Province. The city is named after a nearby lake, the name of which literally means “flooding lake.” The region is historically important. Honghu and its nearby areas including the lake were part of an important Communist base called Hunan-Western Hubei Soviet under the leadership of future Communist field marshal He Long during the Chinese Civil War in the pre-World War II era. The musical, which made its debut in 1959 in Wuhan, capital city of Hubei Province, features folk music popular in Tianmen, Mianyang (today’s Xiantao) and Qianjiang cities in the province.
