The chairman of Taiwan's incoming ruling party Kuomintang (KMT) will visit Beijing to meet Hu Jintao, general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee, the Taipei-based China Times reported Sunday. The newspaper said that Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung planned to meet Hu during a historic trip to the mainland in June. Ma Ying-jeou, of the KMT, won the leadership election in a landslide victory late March. Ma is scheduled to take office on May 20. Taiwan press have reported that Ma was keen to reach an early agreement with the Central Government so that weekend chartered flights across the Taiwan Straits could begin in July, and commercial direct flights between Taiwan and mainland cities could be realized next year. Ma also said he would pave the way for more mainland travelers to visit Taiwan, so that people across the Straits could understand more, helping to boost the local economy. Meanwhile, Lien Chan, Honorary Chairman of the KMT, arrived in Beijing yesterday to attend an Olympics-related ceremony today. The ceremony, to be held in the Olympic Park, is for installing a sculpture created by a Taiwan artist. (SD-Agencies)
