Official to be detained over rail accident
    2008年05月12日  09:26    Shenzhen Daily

GUO JIGUANG, former executive deputy director of the Jinan Railway Bureau, will be detained in connection with the train collision that killed 72 and injured 416 in East China's Shandong Province on April 28.

The Standing Committee of the Shandong Provincial People's Congress permitted the detention of Guo, who is also a deputy to the provincial people's congress, or the provincial legislature, at its third meeting Friday.

Guo was dismissed by the Ministry of Railways, which began an investigation into the case April 29, the next day of the accident. The investigation found that Guo was involved in the accident.

Five other people have also been detained over the deadly train collision, the Ministry of Railways said Saturday.

They include two dispatchers, a railway station supervisor, an assistant, and a train driver.

A high-speed train from Beijing to the coastal city of Qingdao derailed in Zibo's Zhoucun District early April 28. Several coaches were thrown onto a parallel track and hit by a train coming from the opposite direction.

The railway accident was the worst to have occurred in China in a decade.

Investigators said the train was traveling much faster than the speed limit on that section of the track, because the driver had not been informed of the speed limit.
