The sun is expensive in Guiyang
    2008年05月14日  10:13    Shenzhen Daily

见过翻译出错的,但还没见过错得这么离谱的。近日有网友发帖,揭露了成都铁路局贵阳客运段上错误百出的中英文对照标牌。该帖展示的中英文标牌错误低级到令人震撼的程度,大家直呼这翻译真是太牛,太强。

Poor and absurd* English translations of signs in a Guiyang-bound train from Chengdu recently became a laughing stock for Internet users, the Chengdu Business News reported.

Posted by the Chengdu Railway Bureau’s Guiyang Passenger Railway Branch, the signs, in Chinese and English, are said to be character-by-character translations.

The English translation of “贵阳乘警支队,” which means “Guiyang Rail Police Detachment,” was turned into “The expensive (贵) sun (阳) multiplies (乘) by a duty a police (警) to pay (支) a brigade (队).” Whoever reviewed the translation didn’t even notice that it should have contained the name of the city.

The following line, “警(路)风监督电话,” is more confusing. In English, it says “Police road breeze the hurl tell a telephone,” which makes no sense at all.

This is actually a hotline for reporting police behavior (警风) and road conditions (路风), where “风” (literally “breeze”) carries the meaning of “style” or “behavior” here.

“Although it is an interprovincial* train, what a shame for the image of Chinese railways!” said an Internet user.

Ye Jianmin, a Chengdu schoolmaster, told the Chengdu Business News that even a middle school student wouldn’t have come up with such an absurd translation. He speculated that the translator must have used the most primitive* version of Chinese-English translation software available.

A spokesman for the Guiyang Rail Passenger Branch said they had consulted English-language experts when producing the warning signs and never received any complaints from foreigners. The branch promised to rectify* the signs as soon as possible.
