30 arrested

POLICE arrested 30 people involved in a violent protest in Northwest China’s Gansu Province, a local official said at a press conference Thursday. A group of 30 petitioners, who opposed a resettlement project in Wudu District of Longnan City, initiated the protest Monday. More than 2,000 people eventually became involved, and offices and vehicles were destroyed during the two-day protest.

Strong gales

HELICOPTERS have taken 64 fishermen to hospital after they were trapped by strong gales Thursday morning off the coast near Northeast China’s port city of Dalian. Three others are missing, Xinhua reported.

Seven apprehended

SEVEN people of a construction company have been arrested in Southwest China’s Chongqing for the death of 11 workers.

The seven, including managers and safety supervisors, allowed workers to be lifted in a goods container and took no steps to deal with a cable attaching the container to a crane, even though workers had said the cable was dangerous.

The steel cable broke and the container plunged to the deck of the bridge and killed 11 workers last month.
